HOPE – Building self-reliance for refugees and host communities in Uganda

In Uganda, ongoing displacement and shrinking humanitarian assistance are putting increasing pressure on both refugees and host communities. Through the HOPE project, ZOA works alongside communities in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement to strengthen self-reliance, dignity, and peaceful coexistence.

Running from June 2025 to December 2029, HOPE supports refugees and host communities in moving from dependency towards sustainable recovery. With a total budget of EUR 4.5 million, the project is funded by Pharus.

Integrated strategy

HOPE takes an integrated approach, combining support in food security and livelihoods, land rights, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and mental health and psychosocial support. By addressing these areas together within the same communities, ZOA responds to both immediate needs and longer-term challenges.

Through this approach, the project aims to:

  • Improve food security and promote climate-smart livelihoods
  • Strengthen land tenure security and reduce land-related conflicts
  • Increase access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services
  • Improve mental wellbeing through accessible psychosocial support

Kiryandongo

HOPE is implemented in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement and surrounding host communities in Kiryandongo District, where pressure on land, water, and basic services continues to grow.

By working closely with local authorities, community structures, and partners, ZOA remains committed to supporting communities on their journey from relief to recovery, enabling people to rebuild their lives with dignity.
