Rebuilding in Archanhelske

Anatoliy Krykin (77) supports the ZOA team in Archanhelske, a village in the south of the de-occupied Kherson region. As a former mayor and director of a big farm in the village, he knows everyone. Thus, he is a big help for the Cash for Shelter programme ZOA is running in the village, with funding from EU Humanitarian Aid.

‘ZOA’s programme is fast and efficient’

ZOA is rebuilding and repairing houses in Archanhelske, a village in the south of the de-occupied Kherson region. Anatoliy Krykin (77) helps the ZOA team, as he is a trusted and reputed man in the community and can be a mediator in conversations with the villagers.

Efficient

Engineer Alina from the ZOA team and Anatoliy are visiting possible participants in the programme together. They go from door to door, comparing documents and repairs. Anatoliy believes in ZOA’s Cash for Shelter approach: “It is fast and efficient. It motivates people to organise themselves and use the money in the best way. I like that ZOA gives them the choice where to buy.”

Certificates

They are now examining the repairs that have been done. If everything is alright, both ZOA and the participants will sign the completion certificates.

One of the people Alina and Anatoliy are visiting for signature of the certificate is Liudmyla Hryhorivna Kornuta. The 63-year-old woman was one of the first participants in the project. “Her front door was completely destroyed”, says Anatoliy. “With ZOA’s help, she bought a new entrance door for her house.”

Archanhelske

Russian occupation

Archanhelske was under Russian occupation for seven months. Out of 526 houses, 348 were damaged and 50 totally demolished. Most people were evacuated. Before the war the village had around 3.000 inhabitants, of which the majority fled. About 1.700 of them are back now. Thanks to ZOA’s Cash for Shelter programme, funded by EU Humanitarian Aid, they now have a place to call home again.
