Paper: Water Conservation for Agriculture

Sudan has the largest irrigated area in sub-Saharan Africa and the second largest in Africa, after Egypt. Agriculture is the major water consumption sector in Sudan, utilizing up to 96% of its annual water withdrawal. Internal renewable water resources (IRWR), Nile system resources, and non-Nilotic water resources are rather limited in Sudan. The erratic nature of the rainfall and its concentration in a short season places Sudan in a vulnerable situation. The significance of both natural resource limitations and climate can contribute to extreme water scarcity.
