Increased resilience

Increased resilience
The focus of the emergency relief for Somali refugees and host communities in the Kobe Refugee Camp is that victims of the combined effect of drought and conflict will increase their resilience to address their immediate needs for survival.

In October, the team of ZOA Ethiopia worked on the following projects:
Distribution of fuel-saving stoves to reduce the consumption of fuel wood in order to promote a healthier environment and to support the reduction of excessive pressure on the very scare vegetation of the area.

  • Till October 23, 3223 fuel-saving stoves have been distributed. It is expected that the team could finish the distribution to all in Kobe camp and host community before the end of October. In total, 6500 stoves will be distributed. A laborious task because the receivers need to be trained how to use this stove.
  • Building a school building that will allow the government and UNHCR to implement a formal education program for 800 primary school children. The location of the permanent school in Kobe camp has been confirmed. At the same site ZOA will build a temporary school building for the use of Save the Children in Emergency Education. This building will be ready in the first week of November.
  • Increased abilities to generate income. Refugees will gain business and marketing skills and, with small start-up money or materials, start income generating activities. The construction of a building for the IGA (Income Generating Activity) training has started and will very likely be finished before the end of October. Beneficiary selection is ongoing with involvement of ARRA, UNHCR, RCC and Women Association representatives.
